'An absolute grenade': Man City told they're missing out on a £50m gem to Vincent Kompany

Former Manchester City midfielder Didi Hamann thinks Vincent Kompany could be about to land a top player, after he was linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium.

Kompany is the new head coach at the Allianz Arena, with the Bavarian giants swooping for the Manchester City legend despite relegation with Burnley in 2023/24.

Kompany impressed them despite a tough season, and is now tasked with getting the club back on top in Germany, after they came third in the league last term.

Bayern are already making moves and it has been widely reported now that Michael Olise will be joining.

Olise was a player City reportedly had interest in, both last summer and this.

But he looks Germany-bound now, and Hamann reckons he will be a wonderful addition for Kompany.

Last summer, it was reported that City were really keen to sign Olise.

In the end, he signed a new deal with Crystal Palace. Olise had injury problems in 2023/24, but posted very good numbers when he played – in 19 appearances he scored 10 goals and made six assists

City were recently stated to have had Olise on their radar again this summer.

But it is Bayern who have won the race for the 22-year-old, and the expectation is that confirmation of the deal will arrive soon.

And Hamann, who played for City from 2006 to 2009, is a big fan of the player.

He told Bild: “Michael Olise is an absolute grenade, a player for whom the spectators go to the stadium. Olise and Eberechi Eze really impressed at Crystal Palace.

“Olise would be an absolute attraction for the Bundesliga. Olise is also worth a transfer fee of 50 million euros. However, Bayern would then also have to make sure that they take in money, give some away from their many attacking players.”

Olise at City would have been fun

At this point, everything is pointing to Olise completing a move to Bayern – and he could be a cracking signing for them.

Olise has been a breath of fresh air at Palace, especially since Oliver Glasner took charge.

It would have been very fun indeed to see him in a City shirt, as someone capable of playing out on the right and centrally. He might have made a decent positional replacement for Bernardo Silva had the Portuguese left, although the pair are quite different in terms of their profiles.

It will be interesting to see how he gets on under Kompany.

He will be supplying a world-class striker in Harry Kane and you would imagine that there’s a good chance that Hamann’s prediction about him lighting up the league will ring true.
