Jermaine Jenas makes claim about Joe Gomez ahead of England vs Slovenia at Euro 2024

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has taken plenty of criticism for England’s struggles at Euro 2024 so far.

The Three Lions remain unbeaten in Germany, beating Serbia 1-0 and drawing 1-1 with Denmark in Group C.

But their performances have been underwhelming, with manager Gareth Southgate also under heavy fire.

The final group standings will be decided on the final matchday, with England meeting Slovenia and Denmark taking on Serbia.

And Southgate certainly has a big decision to make on Alexander-Arnold, with Gary Neville suggesting that the only way he can make the starting XI is with a formation change.

Jermaine Jenas makes Joe Gomez claim ahead of England vs Slovenia

His former Manchester United teammate Paul Scholes meanwhile believes the Liverpool star should be played at left-back.

But fellow pundit Jermaine Jenas is eyeing that role for another Anfield ace, with the former Tottenham midfielder wanting Southgate to start Joe Gomez at left-back against Slovenia.

“I’d bring in Joe Gomez for Kieran Tripper,” said Jenas, as per BBC Sport. “I thought when asked to play left-back for Liverpool this year he did it very well, plus he gives us more of a solid base and would allow Kyle Walker to get forward more.”

Will the Liverpool duo feature under Gareth Southgate?

Unlike Alexander-Arnold, Gomez is yet to feature under Southgate in Germany, having watched on from the bench in both matches so far.

His Anfield teammate was started in midfield in the opening two games, before being withdrawn for Conor Gallagher on both occasions.

Alexander-Arnold would miss out entirely this time if Jenas was in charge of the side, with the pundit instead opting for Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo in midfield.

He would continue with Kyle Walker at right-back, and John Stones and Marc Guehi in central defence, as Southgate has done so far.

The England manager named an unchanged side for the Denmark match after the win against Serbia, but the fixture didn’t quite go to plan.

Gomez does represent a viable option at left-back, particularly given his impressive form there for Liverpool.

He filled in effortlessly for the injured Andy Robertson at various stages of the most recent campaign, but Southgate’s tendency to stick with the same players is likely to see Trippier continue at left-back.
