Gary Lineker says Liverpool have a player who has been ‘hung out to dry’

Liverpool players have garnered plenty of attention this summer given their participation at major tournaments.

The Reds are well represented at the likes of Euro 2024 and Copa America, while Wataru Endo could be added to the list when the Olympics gets underway.

It all means that new Liverpool manager Arne Slot will have to be very patient to get his full group of players together for pre-season.

The delay is certain to hinder his preparation for the new season, although fortunately several other Premier League managers will be in a similar position.

The bosses will all be keeping an eye on their players this summer, perhaps quietly hoping that their respective tournaments end sooner rather than later.

Gary Lineker makes Trent Alexander-Arnold claim for England

One Anfield ace who is already heading home is Andy Robertson, with the Scotland left-back issuing an apology after his nation’s early exit from Euro 2024.

But among his Reds teammates still in the competition is fellow full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has been playing in midfield for England.

Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate was experimenting with the player in midfield before the tournament, with former England striker Gary Lineker now calling the experiment a failure, although he does feel sympathy for Alexander-Arnold.

“I do feel a bit for Alexander-Arnold,” Lineker said on the BBC iPlayer. “I feel like he has been hung out to dry a little bit.

“Gareth Southgate said it was an experiment and now it looks like it is an experiment that doesn’t work.

“It is very hard to play in a new position even when a team is playing well. When a team is disjointed and not together, not getting up the pitch it becomes difficult.”

Can the Liverpool man help England top their Euro 2024 group?

As is always the case, there has been plenty of noise surrounding England in and around the major tournament.

And as is often the case, the Three Lions have let themselves down on the big stage, picking up just four points from their first two matches.

Many players and pundits have pointed to the fact that the nation remains unbeaten thus far, but it is very clear that they will not go on to lift the trophy in their current form.

The likes of Spain, Portugal and Germany all look very strong, and will be confident of overcoming the star-studded England side.

Southgate has a long list of talented players to call upon, but getting them to perform on the pitch has been a tricky task.

Whether or not Alexander-Arnold gets the chance to end Group C strongly remains to be seen, while his Anfield teammate Joe Gomez is likely to warm the bench for the third successive match.

The Three Lions lead Group C heading into the final game, with Denmark and Slovenia on two points, and Serbia rock bottom with one.
