'I think' - Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney claims former England star was most 'annoying' member of the Three Lions camp

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has admitted that one former Manchester City star could be “really annoying” during their time together in the England camp.

Wayne Rooney had a prolific playing career on the international stage with England, despite failing to lift any major silverware with the Three Lions.

The former Manchester United striker, who was part of England’s so-called ‘Golden Generation’ team, made 120 appearances during his time with the Three Lions.

Rooney also once held the record for being England’s all-time leading scorer after he surpassed United legend Sir Bobby Charlton in the goalscoring chart.

However, Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane would later eclipse the goalscoring record set by former England teammate Rooney.

Rooney, who scored 53 times for England, impressed at major international tournaments for the Three Lions, including his sensational run at Euro 2004.

The England and United legend served as captain of his country before calling it time on his international career in 2017.

Rooney talks former Man City star

Wayne Rooney has been part of BBC’s coverage as a pundit for Euro 2024 in Germany this summer.

The 38-year-old former Manchester United and England captain committed to his punditry duties for BBC, despite his recent return to management.

Rooney was sacked by Birmingham City back in January after an ill-fated spell before he was appointed Plymouth Argyle head coach last month.

Speaking on BBC Sport, Rooney recalled his time on international duty with England and how former Manchester City star Joe Hart could be “really annoying” at times.

“I think when we were around the hotel, we’d [Rooney and Hart] mess around, he used to stay in the bedroom next to me and was really annoying around there [laughs],” he said.

“No, but as a group of young lads, it’s important that you have fun and relax around the camp as well.”

Hart responds to England legend Rooney

Joe Hart, who was capped for England 75 times, called it time on his successful playing career this summer after his spell with Scottish side Celtic.

The 37-year-old former England star, much like United legend Rooney, has been part of BBC’s punditry line-up for this summer’s Euros.

Following on from Rooney’s admission, Alex Scott asked: “Why were you being annoying, Joe?”

Hart, who lifted two Premier League titles with City, playfully teased Rooney and suggested that it was a “bit of banter” that emerged in the England camp.

“Can’t help it! It’s a long time away and you develop those relationships and you find stuff out about each other,” he said.

“Try to get the golf going, a bit of banter going. I think you’ve just got to understand each other.

“Everyone’s different, you pick your moments. Obviously, you don’t want to get it wrong with him [Rooney].

“If you do and he’s in a good mood, we can play but other than that […].”
