Chase Briscoe describes reaction to Christopher Bell leaking Joe Gibbs Racing announcement

Chase Briscoe will drive the No. 19 car for Joe Gibbs Racing next year, but everyone knew because Christopher Bell let it slip last week. During his press conference on Tuesday, Briscoe talked about Bell accidentally announcing the news before it was official.

“I think it’s the worst kept secret in the sport for a while,” Briscoe said. “Christopher I guess just couldn’t hold it in any longer. But it’s super exciting for me to come over here to an organization that I feel like this matches my values, and just the culture over here is just different than anywhere I’ve been before.

“It starts at the top withJoe [Gibbs] and Dave [Alpern] and everybody. It’s been fun just for a couple of weeks now to kind of learn that side of them and see what makes them be as successful as they are.”

Bell leaked the news last week before winning the Xfinity Series and Cup Series race in New Hampshire. “I had no idea what to do,” Bell told Kevin Harvick on Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour about the “Chase comment, per Fox Sports. “I literally didn’t know if I should just leave, literally drop the mic and leave. I had no idea what to do or say.”

Chase Briscoe said joining Joe Gibbs Racing was a quick process

Briscoe will join Joe Gibbs Racing after spending four years at Stewart-Haas Racing. During the press conference, Briscoe revealed that he began talking to teams once Tony Stewart announced that Stewart-Haas was shutting down at the end of the year.

“It really started the day that Tony [Stewart] told us all,” Briscoe said. “He kind of asked us at the end that day when he told all the drivers do you guys have any questions? I said ‘What does this mean about us being able to talk to other people?’ He said ‘You guys are free to do whatever you want.

“So literally in the conference room, I just started texting all the team presidents I knew, and Dave [Alpern] was one of them, and just said, ‘Hey Stewart-Haas just let us know today that we’re kind of free to do whatever we want. Would love the opportunity to talk to you guys if there’s any potential there. The SHR announcement got done on Tuesday, and Wednesday night, Dave called me and said ‘Hey, would like to go to breakfast on Thursday,’ and I think I was signed by Tuesday. So it was a super-quick thing, it was like four or five days.”
