Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez took centre stage during Argentina’s Copa America victory over Chile.
Argentina continued their strong start to Copa America this week, as Emi Martinez and his teammates earned their second win in Group A.
The World Champions booked their spot in the next round with a 1-0 win against Chile in the early hours of Wednesday morning, a game that the Aston Villa goalkeeper starred in.
Martinez made the headlines for reasons aside from his strong performance on the night, as a familiar element of his personality shone through.

The majority of the fixture was played at 0-0, as Lautaro Martinez’s match-winner came in the 88th minute to the despair of Chile.
The goal was an even more difficult pill to swallow for the Chile fans inside the stadium, as Villa’s hero Martinez made his presence known to the supporters behind him.
During the second half, the Argentine ‘keeper was taunted by the fans behind his goal, to which he responded boldly when Argentina netted the late winner.

As described by Argentine outlet TyC Sports, Martinez ‘wildly’ shouted at the fans behind him ‘in a state of euphoria’, and then continued his ‘crazy’ celebration by jumping onto the advertising board separating him and the Chile supporters.
As expected, the Villa man’s celebrations were not well received, as he was showered with an even greater level of abuse, something that he certainly would have relished.
Villa fans are familiar with Martinez’s theatrics
As Martinez has risen to prominence over the years, the Argentine’s personality has shone through, to the joy of those who are on his side.
Those who face the goalkeeper are less thrilled to be on the receiving end of his taunts, as seen during the 2023/24 campaign at Villa Park.
Most notably, Martinez was serenaded by Villa fans as he shared a joke with LOSC Lille supporters during the Europa Conference League quarter-final second leg.
The 31-year-old was booked for his behaviour, which didn’t phase him as he went on the win Villa the shoot-out, something that made him even more of an enemy in France.
At the 2022 World Cup, France fans were left fuming as Martinez won Argentina the final and later mocked Kylian Mbappe whilst celebrating.
It’s a part of Martinez’s game that makes him so loved at Villa and in the Argentina national team, with his gesture during the latest Copa America victory becoming another talking point.
