Man City’s Julian Alvarez amazed by what ‘fantastic’ Liverpool star has done at the Copa America

Liverpool players continue to drive their countries towards dreams of glory in the summer internationals.

The Reds initially had 14 members of the first-team taking part in either the Copa America or Euro 2024.

Although that number has since been cut by one following Andy Robertson crashing out of the Euros with Scotland, there’s still plenty of Liverpool interest in the two tournaments.

With the Reds boasting four South American players from four different countries within their squad, there is particular intrigue in the Copa America.

All of Alisson Becker, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez or Alexis Mac Allister could end up winning it. And after what happened on Wednesday, one player’s chances got marginally better.

All four Liverpool representatives in the USA have now played at least once for their countries.

The standout performer was probably Nunez. The Liverpool No.9 left his poor end of season form back at Anfield to slam home another goal for Uruguay.

Diaz is also said to have ‘amazed’ the crowd with some terrific skills for Colombia during their 2-1 win over Paraguay on Monday night.

Mac Allister is another to have done well for Argentina, registering an assist in their win over Canada, while Alisson and Brazil stumbled to a 0-0 draw with Costa Rica.

With the second round of group games now underway, all four will be looking to kick things up another notch.

Mac Allister has already done that, earning some good reviews for his part in Argentina’s 1-0 win against Chile. Mac Allister reportedly played in a deeper role for the Albiceleste, featuring for the full 90 minutes.

After the game, Liverpool’s No.10 took to Instagram to share his delight in the victory. “Proud to wear these colors and of this team that leaves it all on the court,” he wrote. “Keep on dreaming. Let’s go Argentina!”

His teammates in the national team were duly impressed by Mac Allister. Man City’s Julian Alvarez left a praise and a flames emoji, while Tottenham’s Cristian Romero went with two flames. Finally, Man United’s Lisandro Martinez commented ‘Una calidad’ or, ‘a quality’.

Alexis Mac Allister and Argentina march on

There is a very good reason that Argentina are favourites to win back-to-back Copa America’s under Lionel Scaloni.

Not only do they have Lionel Messi still making magic for them, but they are also an incredibly cohesive unit.

The likes of Alvarez, Mac Allister and Martinez are obviously great rivals for their clubs. But when it comes to the national team they are able to put that to one side and come together.

In terms of Mac Allister himself, this is a quality that really marks him out as a leader. There were signs last season that the 25-year-old could perhaps be a future captain of Liverpool.

As former Liverpool player Kolo Toure commented in April, Mac Allister was ‘fantastic‘ in his ability to run games and get more out of others around him.

This has been as evident for Argentina as it always is for the Reds. With Macca pulling the strings, don’t bet against Messi and co again.
