Kenny McLean Rangers links polarise Norwich City support but they all want one thing

Kenny McLean wouldn’t exactly be the most glamorous signing for Rangers this summer.

The Scotland international, 32, isn’t exactly a signing in the Nils Koppen buy low sell high mould.

But with the Rangers team accused of lacking the bite and belief to better second place, it might just prove one of the signings of the season.

Norwich City’s Player of the Year last season, Kenny McLean is the most aggressive midfielder in a league of aggressive midfielders in the English Championship.

With years of experience at the highest level down south too, Rangers would be signing a wise old midfield head with the bite to back up the club’s tame bark.

A bluenose into the bargain, there’s a reason why we tipped the midfielder as a potential Barry Ferguson-esque figure back at the start of the summer.

But don’t just take our word for it; after six years with Norwich City the Canaries support don’t quite know what to make of reports McLean is potentially Rangers-bound.

Rangers linked to Scotland international

Reports this week broke that Rangers are interested in taking Kenny McLean back north of the border.

The boyhood Rangers fan was released by the club as a kid and made his name with St Mirren and Aberdeen before heading to Carrow Road.

With McLean contracted to Norwich until 2026 at the earliest, Rangers will have to cough up for the midfielder with Canaries fanzine the Pink Un suggesting as much this week.

And the Norwich fans as a whole have had plenty to say as Rangers reportedly line up a move for their star player from last season.

Making 52 appearances for the club last campaign, McLean’s exit would leave quite a hole at the heart of the club’s midfield but in a summer of sweeping change all round, the time just might be right.

Norwich have appointed FC Nordsjælland manager Johannes Hoff Thorup as they look to earn promotion back to the Premier League.

It’s led to much chatter over McLean’s future with Norwich fans certainly split on what happens next.

Norwich fans split on potential McLean exit

In what is a glowing testament to McLean’s status at Norwich, there are plenty who want the reported Rangers target to stick around.

One supporter told Rangers to ‘bobby off’ as they reportedly target their star midfielder.

Another said that Rangers have ‘already taken enough guys’ from Carrow Road, proclaiming ‘enough is enough’.

It comes with Rangers signing Todd Cantwell and Kieran Dowell in recent seasons.

One X user said ‘I hope not’ in response to the Rangers links, adding that McLean has been a ‘great player’ for the Championship side.

Another fan insisted ‘hands off’ in response to the reports.

Some other Norwich City supporters have been a tad more sentimental.

Understanding that this might be the last time McLean gets the chance to play for Rangers, some reckon a deal ‘makes sense’.

Others reckon it’d be a ‘shame’ to see McLean leave but would not ‘begrudge’ the long-serving midfielder the move.

Others have been a little less positive about McLean’s contribution to Norwich City.

One supporter urged the club to ‘let him go’ whilst another Norwich fan proudly announced that he ‘could not give a toss’ what happens with the player.

One even added ‘prayers do work then’.

But if you’re looking for one unifying statement to sum up the bulk of the Norwich City support, it is quite simple.

As one Canaries supporter exclaimed, over the piece the support will have no problem with McLean as long as they ‘get a fee’ for the ageing midfielder.

That’s said it’s fair to say Norwich City fans are split on links between Rangers and Kenny McLean this summer.

The Gers do have to replace substantial experience in the middle of the park with John Lundstram and Ryan Jack both leaving the club at the end of their contracts.
