Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann started the preparations for the Euro 2024 last 16 clash against Denmark without regular starter Antonio Rüdiger.

The defender was not part of Wednesday's training in Germany's headquarters in Herzogenaurach. Rüdiger's suffered a right thigh muscle strain in the final group match against Switzerland on Sunday.

The German Football Federation (DFB) was still not 100% sure whether the medical department would get the defender fit in time for the first match in the knock-out phase.

"In the end, Toni will decide together with the coach and the medical department. At the moment, it's too early to say anything definitive," Germany director Rudi Völler said.

He added that Rüdiger only completed a short running session on Wednesday.

Another issue for Nagelsmann is that Rüdiger's partner in the heart of the defence, Bayer Leverkusen's Jonathan Tah, will miss the match over a suspension after picking up a second yellow card against the Swiss.

This could force coach Julian Nagelsmann to field back-ups Nico Schlotterbeck and Waldemar Anton, who have just 15 caps between them and have never played together.
