Svensson wants to keep Union values while also taking the next step

New Union Berlin coach Bo Svensson wants to find the right mix of well-established practices and new ideas to make his club succesful.

"It's about keeping the good things that Union Berlin have done over the years. The values that they stand for and the culture that is cultivated here," Svensson said during his official presentation on Wednesday.

He stressed, however that "you always have to be prepared to take the next step and think about things."

Denmark's Svensson succeeds Nenad Bjelica who had to go in early May, and caretaker Marco Grote.

"I sensed that there was a very familiar background here. That there are people who are passionate about the club. I was also in the stadium myself and experienced it all. I think that simply suits me very, very well," the coach said of his decision to join Union.

Union avoided a Bundesliga relegation/promotion play-off tie on the final matchday of the season with a last-minute 2-1 victory against Freiburg, after finishing fourth the previous season.

Svensson coached Mainz from 2021 until last November and has been a top candidate for Union since club icon Urs Fischer was dismissed in autumn.

Managing director Horst Heldt said that the Dane fits the club "like a glove" and that both are in close dialogue over the squad planning.

"We are all convinced that the players we have under contract are all players who will help us. Nevertheless, there will be changes, but we are only officially starting today and so we are slowly working our way in," Heldt said.
