Neuendorf: Relationship with FIFA getting better again

German Football Federation (DFB) president Bernd Neuendorf does not rate FIFA corrupt and has said that their strained relationship with the world governing body is improving again.

Neuendorf had not actively supported Gianni Infantino's re-election as FIFA president last year, there were differences around the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and also raised eyebrows with Saudi Arabia set to host the 2034 event.

"We have met a few times and had good talks. There is no other way," Neuendorf told Der Spiegel news magazine. "We must normalize our relationship with FIFA to a certain degree."

FIFA was in the past rocked by affairs around officials who also held FIFA positions but Neuendorf said he doesn't consider the governing body corrupt.

Neuendorf, who is a member of the powerful FIFA council, said that despite FIFA's difficult reputation in Germany the body is also doing a lot of good for the development of football around the world.

Looking at the upcoming 2034 World Cup decision, Neuendorf said: "We will look at this with UEFA and will come to an agreement on how we should deal with this candidature within FIFA.

"The FIFA statutes stipulate that we also have to take a stance on human rights and similar issues. We won't be sitting back and doing nothing."

Like Qatar, Saudi Arabia has been criticized in connection with its human rights record, and FIFA has come under fire from rights groups over the expected choice as well.

In the rotation scheme among continents it is Asia's turn for 2034, and Saudi Arabia is the only bidder. Final confirmation is expected in December.
