'Door is open': Nancy Froston responds when asked if Max Wober could now make Leeds return

Max Wober has been very vocal about his future in the last few weeks but he remains contracted to Leeds United, and Nancy Froston has responded when asked if he could return to Elland Road.

Wober, 26, was one of eight players to use the relegation loan clause last summer inserted into his contract by Victor Orta that allowed him to leave the club on loan without Leeds being able to stop him.

The Austria star cited Euro 2024 reasons for his immediate exit, joining Daniel Farke’s old side Gladbach. He played 27 times for Gladbach during the 2024-25 season with injury limiting him from playing more.

But when fit, he was first choice. Now, Wober is currently at Euro 2024 and while he struggled and scored an own goal in Austria’s opener against France, he starred against the Netherlands last night in a 3-2 win.

Nancy Froston responds when asked about Max Wober’s future

Froston has taken over from the legendary Phil Hay as The Athletic’s Leeds United writer ahead of the new campaign and what a time to take over, with a hectic summer on the horizon for the Leeds board.

Leeds have sorted out the future of five of the eight players that left on loan using Orta’s clause last summer. But for Wober, Rasmus Kristensen and Diego Llorente, it remains completely up in the air.

Froston was asked on the One Leeds Fan channel if Wober could follow Brenden Aaronson and return to Leeds. She responded by saying that the door is open but would expect Wober to still leave Leeds.

“You wouldn’t have put much money on Brenden Aaronson coming back. I guess that shows the door is open. Maybe they come in, have a chat with Daniel Farke. Yes, I probably still expect Wober to go out.”

Max Wober has commented on his Leeds future recently

With Euro 2024 underway, it is expected that Wober and Farke have been unable to have a chat. But it is clear Leeds are trying to sell, reducing their initial asking price of £14.5m to £12.5m with Gladbach keen.

Wober recently told German media that he has not heard anything yet regarding his future from Leeds, and that until Austria are knocked out, that “radio silence” is likely to continue as Austria reach the last 16.

“There is currently total radio silence on both sides. I’ve heard from Leeds that there will be talks once the European Championships are over. They want me to concentrate on Austria for now,” Wober said.
