‘Little bit alarming’: £275k-a-week F1 driver is now ‘running out of patience’ with his team – journalist

The Spanish Grand Prix was a positive race for the likes of Mercedes and Alpine but much more worrying for several other manufacturers in the paddock.

Visa Cash App RB delivered their most important update of the season but were nowhere near the points at the end of the race.

Williams also look completely off the pace while Sauber’s pointless streak continues.

Speaking on the Autosport Podcast, journalist Filip Cleeren admitted that one driver in particular was getting very frustrated with the performance of his car during the Spanish Grand Prix.

Another team that were way off the pace at the Circuit de Catalunya was Aston Martin.

Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll never looked like they had of securing a top-ten finish for the team.

Cleeren now worries that Alonso might be beginning to run out of patience with Aston Martin after another frustrating race.

It’s unlikely that he’ll be questioning his decision to sign a new contract with the team just yet, but he’ll want to see progress soon, especially as this appears to be the second season in a row that Aston Martin have failed to fully understand their update packages.

Fernando Alonso beginning to run out of patience with Aston Martin

Talking about Aston Martin’s disastrous race at the Spanish Grand Prix, Cleeren said: “With Aston Martin, it doesn’t come completely out of the blue either because you also have to put it into the context of the circuits that we’ve been to.

“Aston Martin are particularly struggling to keep their car balanced through the long, flowing corners which Barcelona has quite a few of.

“But then Canada didn’t have any, so that was a circuit that suited Aston Martin really well and that’s when they got double points.

“It’s this run of circuits coming up that’s not going to be that kind to them.

“They are really up against in terms of trying to bring this high downforce fixes to this particular weakness that they have.

“It’s starting to become a little bit alarming. Yesterday, Fernando Alonso said, ‘Well this is actually better than expected’ and he was 12, so he said that with a wry smile.

“Today, getting lapped at his home race, the mask sort of fell off and he said, ‘It’s time for less talk and more action’, so he’s starting to run out of patience I feel.”

What will Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin team look like in 2026?

For Aston Martin, the chances of suddenly challenging for race wins during the current set of regulations is incredibly unlikely.

Although Fernando Alonso is a double world champion, his last victory came 11 years ago and he simply doesn’t have a car capable of challenging at the front of the grid.

The £275,000-a-week driver will be encouraged by the team’s position heading into the next ruleset.

Aston Martin will be working with Honda as their exclusive power unit supplier and they’ve recently enjoyed a lot of success with Red Bull.

Their new facility at Silverstone has now opened and will be fully functioning in the lead up to the new ruleset given their employees the best chance possible of building a championship-winning car.

Lawrence Stroll is also working hard to bring in talented people behind the scenes including one key director from Ferrari.

The crowning jewel of that effort would be Adrian Newey and negotiations have reportedly taken place between the two parties.

Alonso is understandably frustrated right now with a car that’s drifting backwards into the midfield, but the long-term potential of the team is something that needs to be taken very seriously.
