Alex Morgan has not been included in the 18-player US squad for the football tournament at the Paris Olympics.

The 34-year-old, arguably the most recognizable star in women's football, has amassed a remarkable 224 caps for her country but will sit out the Games in late July and and early August.

Morgan injured her ankle on April 19 and was out for a month, but she was in the US squad friendly matches against South Korea in early June.

The US will face Zambia, Australia and the Germany in Paris.

“Making an Olympic roster is a huge privilege and an honor and there is no denying that it was an extremely competitive process among the players and that there were difficult choices, especially considering how hard everyone has worked over the past 10 months,” new coach Emma Hayes said in a statement.

Morgan won Olympic gold with the US in 2012.
