Bulgaria is seeking to involve the European Union in its conflict with North Macedonia over a mention for Bulgarians in the preamble to the constitution of North Macedonia, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said in Sofia on Wednesday.

Radev said he was expecting immediate and specific talks on the observance of European principles and norms in the EU expansion process. North Macedonia, which borders Bulgaria, is a candidate for accession to the bloc.

North Macedonia's recently appointed Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski has been reported by Bulgarian public radio to have said that the agreed amendment to the constitution will not be passed while he is in office.

Between 2020 and 2022, Bulgaria blocked EU accession talks with North Macedonia on the issue. Sofia has right of veto on every stage of the accession process.
