Live N.J. power outage tracker: More than 35K without power after fierce overnight storms

UPDATE: Thunderstorm threats in weekend forecast after 2 dry, pleasant days

Powerful winds generated by strong thunderstorms have snapped trees and electrical lines in parts of New Jersey on Wednesday, sparking tens of thousands of power outages across the state.

Data compiled from NJ.com’s Power Outage Tracker — which monitors outage numbers from utility companies across the region — showed more than 35,000 homes and businesses without power as of 1 p.m. Thursday, down from 105,000 around 10:50 p.m. Wednesday night.

A 30-year-old East Orange man was killed Wednesday night after a large tree in his backyard fell on him while he was gathering items to bring inside during a thunderstorm, officials said.

A woman in Bergen County was seriously hurt when a tree crashed through her home during the storms Wednesday evening.
