Labour candidate for Newark Saj Ahmad pulls out of open General Election campaign events over fears for her safety, which have been reported to the police

A Newark election candidate has pulled out of open campaign events over fears for her personal safety.

In a statement made by Saj Ahmad, Labour’s candidate for Newark, she says that threats had been made to her personal safety, which have been reported to the police, and steps are now being taken to protect herself, her team and volunteers.

As a result, Ms Ahmad and her campaign team have taken the decision to pull out of certain open events for the rest of the election campaign where safety could be endangered.

Sajidah Ahmad will stand as the Labour candidate for Newark in the upcoming General Election on July 4.

The full statement reads: “Across Newark, Southwell, Bingham, Tuxford and the villages you see everyday acts of care and humanity. People helping other families who are facing a very real cost-of-living crisis.

“Volunteers going over and above to help those with learning difficulties - because they are not getting the proper access to services. These people and many others are the very best of the Newark constituency and our country.

“It is also very clear when I am out and about across our area, that people are ready to reject cruel ideologies and are prepared to engage positively with me, with Labour and our plan to put them and the country first. People in Newark are craving change.

“I have put myself forward to be Newark's next MP, as I know I can match the ambition of the people here and have the credentials and integrity that they want in their representative.

“However, as we approach polling day, I have had threats made to my personal safety. These incidents have been reported to the police who are taking appropriate action. I would like to thank them for their reassuring support. I have taken action to ensure the safety of my team and our volunteers.

“The nasty actions of a misguided few are designed to despoil our democracy, which should be free from abuse and threats.

“The safety of myself and those around me has to be of the utmost priority.

“Therefore, in the light of recent events, I will not be attending certain open events during the rest of the election campaign where safety could be endangered.

“This will not deter me from making myself as open and accessible to people as possible.

“I will continue to shine a light on the very best of Newark and give a voice to those who are ready for change.”
