Unai Emery knows he can't sell 'outstanding' homegrown talent amid Aston Villa transfer U-turn

Aston Villa have rejected an offer from one of the traditional Premier League ‘Big Six’ for one of their biggest talents, showing they have made a U-turn on the player’s future.

Despite a remarkable season in which Aston Villa secured Champions League qualification, Unai Emery has had to worry about the players he will be losing more so than who he can bring in.

That is because Villa are in danger of breaching Premier League PSR and have subsequently needed to make sales ahead of the 30th June deadline.

It now looks as though they are set to comply with the rules once the deal that sees Douglas Luiz sign for Juventus and Villa receive Samuel Iling-Junior, Enzo Barrenecha plus cash in return is complete.

Sales of academy duo Tim Iroegbunam and Omari Kellyman will also be a big part of the reason Villa should escape punishment and this has allowed them to perform a transfer U-turn on the shining light of their academy.

Aston Villa will now reject Jacob Ramsey offers

23-year-old Jacob Ramsey missed large chunks of last season through injury but is Villa’s best academy graduate since Jack Grealish.

Given he is homegrown and any sale represents pure profit, his talents attracting interest, and the fact Villa were concerned about their finances, it was believed the club were open to offers for the midfielder this summer.

However, the club instead made the decision to sell Luiz to ensure they could keep their local star at the club and can now afford to reject all offers for his services.

This has now been evidenced by the fact Villa have reportedly rejected an offer for Ramsey from Tottenham Hotspur that would see the youngster head to North London and Emery’s side receive £20 million plus Giovani Lo Celso in return.

Villa fans will have been concerned that the sales of their brightest academy talents was going to culminate in a departure for the only one currently in the first team in Ramsey.

With Iroegbunam heading to Everton for £9 million and Kellyman set to wrap up a £19 million move to Chelsea, it is crucial Villa keep Ramsey to show their current youth team players there is still a chance to make the grade at Villa Park.

Emery called Ramsey ‘very important’ in a January press conference, citing the fact he is a local lad as one of the reasons.

One of the best things Emery’s predecessor Steven Gerrard did was nurture Ramsey’s talent and give him regular opportunities.

The former Liverpool midfielder was full of praise for the England under-21 international in December 2021.

Gerrard was speaking after an incredible solo goal from Ramsey helped Villa beat Norwich City 2-0 and said: “I thought his [Ramsey’s] performance today was outstanding.

“The goal was top drawer, to carry the ball, play the one two and finish with that strength on your weaker side.

“I think that should be in the running for goal of the month and I’d like to see a better one than that.”

Now, with the PSR pressures lessening, Villa fans will be delighted that the club look set to do all they can to keep Ramsey at Villa Park.
