Two UCL winners & more: Most expensive Championship player sales amid £40m Jobe Bellingham claim at Sunderland

Sunderland star Jobe Bellingham is a reported target for Crystal Palace.

Sunderland face a battle to keep 18-year-old Jobe Bellingham this summer, with Crystal Palace among the teams eyeing a summer transfer deal.

It’s reported that Crystal Palace have had bids for Bellingham knocked back and that Sunderland want at least £20million for the attacker.

But there’s suggestions that Bellingham could be worth up to £40million if he stays at the Stadium of Light for another season.

With that in mind, we look at where Bellingham would rank among the most expensive Championship player sales of all time…

10. Jude Bellingham (£25million)

The 10-most expensive Championship player sale of all-time is Jobe’s older brother Jude, who left Birmingham City to join Borussia Dortmund for a £25million fee in 2020.

He later joined Real Madrid in 2023 for a reported fee of close to £100million.

9. Ollie Watkins (£29million)

Aston Villa spent close to £30million on signing Ollie Watkins from Brentford in 2020, and it’s proved to be money well spent with the England man having scored 70 goals in 169 total appearances for the club.

8. Joao Pedro (£29million)

Before the end of the 2022/23 season, Brazilian youngster Joao Pedro sealed a big money move from Watford to Brighton.

He became the Hornets’ second most-expensive player sale after Richarlison to Everton during the 2018/19 season.

7. James Ward-Prowse (£29.5million)

Another high profile departure last summer was that of midfielder James Ward-Prowse, who left relegated Southampton to join West Ham in a move worth a reported £29.5million.

6. Moussa Sissoko (£30million)

Following Newcastle United’s relegation from the Premier League in 2016, former French international Moussa Sissoko sealed a £30million Premier League return with Tottenham Hotspur.

5. Tino Livramento (£31million)

Joining Ward-Prowse in leaving Southampton last summer was former Chelsea youngster Tino Livramento, who sealed a big money move to Sunderland’s North East rivals Newcastle United.

4. Harvey Barnes (£37million)

Leicester City were also relegated in 2023, having since sealed their immediate return to the top flight along with Southampton.

Newcastle would raid Leicester City as well as Southampton, signing attacker Harvey Barnes in a deal reported to be worth around £37million.

3. Nathan Ake (£38million)

Following Bournemouth’s relegation from the Premier League on the final day of the 2019/20 season, Manchester City swooped in for Dutch centre-back Nathan Ake.

City paid £38million for Ake who’s since won four Premier League titles and a Champions League as well.

2. James Maddison (£40million)

Another big money Leicester City sale last summer came in the form of James Maddison, who moved to Tottenham Hotspur in what was a widely reported story.

Spurs paid £40million for the Englishman, who scored four and assisted nine more in his maiden season in North London.

1. Romeo Lavia (£52million)

The biggest-ever Championship player sale came last summer, in what was the biggest summer for player sales in the second tier.

In another widely reported move, Chelsea eventually won the race to sign Romeo Lavia from Southampton, surpassing the £50million mark for his signature.

Since, Lavia has made just one first-team appearance for Chelsea.
