Report: Derby County now poised to complete free agent signing with player undergoing medical

Derby County are poised to complete their first summer signing, ahead of their return to the Championship.

Derby County are returning to the Championship after a two-year hiatus. But its been a slow start to proceedings in the summer transfer window.

The Rams have made Corey Blackett-Taylor a permanent player but are yet to bring in any of their reported summer transfer targets.

In fact, Paul Warne is seemingly missing out on Derby County transfer targets, with the likes of Viktor Johansson having joined Stoke City, and striker Josh Windass now in talks with West Brom.

But there’s still time for the Rams to oversee a busy transfer window before their 2024/25 Championship opener vs Blackburn Rovers on August 9th.

Warne though won’t want to waste any more time. And now it seems like Derby County are closing in on their first new signing of the summer transfer window.

Ben Osborn undergoing Derby County medical

Departing Sheffield United midfielder Ben Osborn has been linked with a summer transfer to Pride Park, with interest from Watford too.

But Alan Nixon recently revealed that Derby County are set to sign Osborn on a free transfer this summer.

Nixon adds that Osborn has no qualms about joining Derby County given his previous ties to local rivals Nottingham Forest.

Now, Football Insider have revealed that Osborn is ‘undergoing a Derby County medical’ on Thursday, having ‘agreed the terms of a deal’.

The same report adds that Osborn to Derby County is set to be completed ‘imminently’.

Voted Nottingham Forest’s Player of the Season for the 2017/18 Championship campaign, the 29-year-old has 290 Championship appearances to his name.

He’s also scored 19 and assisted 33 in that time, playing as either a left-sided midfielder or a more central one.

Paul Warne will love one thing about Ben Osborn at Derby County

Osborn brings versatility and Premier League quality to a Rams side that is lacking that bit of star quality to give them a fighting chance in the Championship next season.

But what Warne may love most about Osborn is his Championship pedigree; not only has he got nearly 300 appearances in the second tier to his name, he’s also won promotion from it with Sheffield United.

Whilst the Rams may not be looking to challenge for the top six next time round, Osborn’s promotion experience will give Warne a player who knows what it takes to succeed in the second tier.

Not only that, but he’s impressed with Forest in the Championship before; that 2017/18 Player of the Season year saw Osborn grab four goals and manage five assists in 46 league appearances, playing mostly on the left-side of midfield.

Osborn is a good first signing for Derby County this summer, and a few more of this calibre would give the Rams a huge helping hand in the league next season.
