Seven people have been killed in Israeli army attacks on targets in Gaza City, the Hamas-controlled civil defence forces said on Thursday.

Dozens more Palestinians had been injured in the bombardment of the Shejaiya neighbourhood, it added. Palestinian media reported heavy attacks on the area.

The information could not be independently verified.

The Israeli army said it was unable to confirm the information, when asked for comment.

Earlier, the army had called on residents of several neighbourhoods in Gaza City to leave, in what is usually a sign of imminent new Israeli military operations in the area.

All residents and displaced persons were urged to immediately leave the districts of Shejaiya, al-Turkuman and Tuffah and move to an area designated as a "humanitarian zone" in the south of the coastal region, according to a call published in Arabic by an Israeli military spokesman on Thursday.

According to the health authority controlled by the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement, at least 37,765 people have been killed and another 86,429 injured in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the war. The figures do not differentiate between civilians and combatants and cannot be independently verified.

The war was triggered by the October 7 massacre in Israel, in which more than 1,200 people were killed by Hamas terrorists and other groups.
