A police investigation has been launched into threats of intimidation against a Newark election candidate.
Nottinghamshire Police are now investigating after Labour’s Saj Ahmad revealed in a statement that she had received threats to her personal safety.
In the statement she said: “The nasty actions of a misguided few are designed to despoil our democracy, which should be free from abuse and threats.”
Steps are now being taken to protect Ms Ahmad, her team and volunteers, as for the rest of the campaign they review which events they attend, and will pull out of certain open events where they feel safety could be endangered.
Inspector Charlotte Ellam, district commander for Newark and Sherwood, said: “We have been made aware of allegations of racist and misogynistic abuse towards Ms Ahmad.
"We are in the process of investigating this matter to establish the full circumstances and will continue to liaise with Ms Ahmad as our inquiries progress.
“As a force we take reports of abuse or intimidatory behaviour very seriously, we will investigate, and we will take appropriate action.
“We continue to work at a national and local level to ensure politicians’ safety and to offer support and this work will continue in the run-up to the general election and beyond.”
