Former defender Piszczek returs to Dortmund as assistant coach

Former Borussia Dortmund defender Lukasz Piszczek will return to the club as assistant coach to new boss Nuri Sahin, the Bundesliga team said on Thursday.

The long-serving Dortmund defender left the club in July 2021 after 382 matches. He moved to LKS Goczalkowice-Zdroj in his native Poland, where he served as player-coach.

João Tralhão and Ertugrul Arslan will complete Sahin's coaching staff, while previous assistants Sven Bender and Sebastian Geppert will leave the club.

"Lukasz was my first choice after it became clear that Sven would unfortunately be leaving Dortmund. I have a special bond with him and would have loved to continue working with Sven," Sahin said.

Dortmund said that Bender, who's also a former Dortmund player, would no longer be available "due to his private circumstances and his personal development as a coach."

Tralhão and Arslan already worked with Sahin during his coaching stint at Turkish first division club Antalyaspor.

"With João, Ertugrul and Lukasz, we've managed to put together a trio that brings a lot of expertise and good ideas to the table and will work well with Nuri. We are convinced that their different strengths will help us play a successful season," sporting director Lars Ricken said.
