Suspect in Stuttgart football fanzone stabbing remanded in custody

A 25-year-old man was remanded in custody after a stabbing in the Stuttgart fanzone at the European Championship football match between the Czech Republic and Turkey.

Three people were injured in the incident that occurred on Wednesday evening, during a public screening of the Euro 2024 group stage match between Turkey and the Czech Republic.

The suspect is accused of an attempted murder offence, according to the public prosecutor's office on Thursday.

The three injured men are a 19-year-old German and two Turkish nationals, aged 38 and 60, after the altercation at the event held inside the fanzone on the south-western German city's Schlossplatz square.

The 38-year-old man, who initially suffered critical injuries, is now out of danger.

The police have set up an investigation team.

Germany is hosting the month-long Euro 2024 football tournament with games being played in 10 cities until July 14.
