‘Cringeworthy’: Paul Merson has now made a claim about Man City and Real Madrid

Manchester City have faced off against Real Madrid a significant number of times over the past few years.

Specifically, Pep Guardiola’s side have come up against the Spanish club in their three previous Champions League campaigns.

Out of their six previous games in this period, City have won two, drawn three and lost one.

In last season’s Champions League quarter-final, the Blues drew 3-3 at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg.

Then in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium, the two sides were tied at 1-1 after extra time before Carlo Ancelotti’s side won on penalties to secure their place in the semi-finals.

After beating Bayern Munich in the semis, the La Liga side won the Champions League for the 15th time in their history by beating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley Stadium.

Now though, one pundit has shared a claim regarding Real and how they compare to City.

Paul Merson shares who he feels is better out of Man City and Real Madrid

Appearing in a recent edition of Football’s Greatest, Merson said this about City’s matches against Real in the Champions League last season.

He said: “I know Real Madrid won the Champions League, but let’s not kid ourselves. Man City absolutely destroyed them. I mean, destroyed them. I mean, it was cringeworthy.

“So you can’t tell me Real Madrid are the best team in Europe because they’re absolutely nowhere near Man City.”

City dominated Real last season

In the 3-3 draw back in April between City and Real, the Blues had 62% possession and more shots on target (6 vs 5) than the home side.

Then in the second leg clash at the Etihad, City ended the 120 minutes with 67% possession and a staggering total of 33 attempts at goal.

Back in May, Rodrygo, who scored Real’s goal in the 1-1 draw, admitted that he and his teammates recognised that City were the better team on this occasion.

Taking all of that into account, it’s easy to see why Merson has said that he thinks the Manchester side are far superior to Ancelotti’s team.
