Even young and energetic high school basketball players can use a little down time during the summer. Sophomore to be Josiah Harrington was a little banged up after playing on the EYBL circuit with Meanstreets and for his North Scott High School squad.
The 2027 wing took just about two weeks off to rest up and recover. The result was when his high school team headed to Kansas City to play in an event last weekend, he was at the top of his game.
“I had been working with my therapist to get my legs stronger,” he said. “I got back out there this past weekend in Kansas City and our team played pretty well.”
Last weekend was also one where college coaches could be out. One of them in attendance was Iowa assistant Matt Gatens, who watched Harrington play a couple of times.
On Tuesday, Harrington’s father called Josiah and told him that he needed to call Iowa coach Tristan Spurlock. He did and the result was a scholarship offer from the Iowa Hawkeye Basketball program.
“I was about to go out to lunch and my dad called me told me to call Coach Spurlock. He told me that they were offering and I was so happy and excited. It meant a lot that they believe in me,” Harrington said.
Beyond believing in him the Iowa offer also had a deeper impact.
“I will always remember that moment,” he said. “It’s my home state and I am really close with my family.”
Coach Spurlock said that they will work on scheduling Harrington and his family to visit this fall for a football game. Until then, the next goal for the 6-foot-4 wing prospect is to get back together with his Meanstreets teammates at Peach Jam in a few weeks and win more games.
“We are locked in and ready to go as group,” he said.
