Exclusive - Sunderland and newly promoted Derby and Oxford in battle to land non-league star

Kenton Richardson emerged as one of the best defenders in the National League, but he is now ready to move back into the Football League.

Richardson has spent the last two seasons with Gateshead, playing mainly at centre-half but also at full-back.

He played a starring role for at the International Stadium helping them qualify for the play-offs, although they were not allowed to play because of Football League rules.

Now after his contract at the International Stadium expired, Richardson is poised to to move.

Barnsley, Peterborough and Notts County want Kenton Richardson

HITC understands a host of EFL clubs are now looking to bring Richardson back into league football.

The 24-year-old began his career with Hartlepool United before being snapped up by his hometown club Sunderland.

After two years at the Stadium of Light he left without making a league appearance and joined Gateshead, where he has shone.

Indeed, it is understood that Sunderland are one of the clubs showing an interest in Richardson, but they are not alone.

Newly promoted Championship dup Derby and Oxford are also keeping tabs on the situation, along with Peterborough and Barnsley in League One and Notts County in League Two.

Leaving Gateshead on a high note

Richardson is now set to move on from Gateshead, but he left them with good memories having also helped them to FA Trophy success over Solihull Moors at Wembley.

Richardson admits that the win in May was something he will never forget, and he explained on his Instagram account: “Genuinely one of the best days of my life! Dream come true walking up the Wembley steps as a winner, couldn’t wish to do it with a better group of human beings!

“We’ve made memories that will last a lifetime!”
