'Early stages': Fabrizio Romano says there's something he can 'guarantee' about Liverpool and Eberechi Eze

As Liverpool search for a new attacker this summer, the name of Eberechi Eze has come up.

Eze had a terrific season with Crystal Palace, turning it on towards the end of the campaign to earn a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad.

The 25-year-old even scored at Anfield to derail the Reds’ Premier League title chances in April.

That was one of 11 goals Eze scored for Palace in 2023/24 and has reportedly led to interest from Liverpool.

Arne Slot is said to be in the hunt for an extra forward this summer. With a £60m release clause etched into his contract, perhaps Eze could be the ideal fit.

Fabrizio Romano offers Eberechi Eze update

As with seemingly just about every deal Liverpool may be looking to complete this summer, it’s unlikely that anything will happen with Eze while the Euros are ongoing.

The tournament in Germany has so far disrupted the Reds’ transfer plans completely. Slot is still yet to add any new player to his Liverpool squad.

Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that work cannot be ongoing in the background. The Reds need to be in a position to pounce on their targets at the earliest opportunity.

In terms of Eze, that chance could be coming soon. With the knockouts set to get underway in Germany, there’s a chance that the Palace man could be on his way back home as early as this weekend.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano though, it could still be some time before anything happens with Liverpool and Eze, if anything at all.

Speaking on his Playback channel on Thursday, the journalist responded to questions about whether the Reds are in negotiations with the England winger.

“On Eze and Liverpool, I can guarantee that at the moment still nothing is advanced,” says Romano.

“At the moment the situation is still at the early stages, nothing at advanced stages for Liverpool and Eze.”

Are Liverpool close to any other deals?

It has been a disappointing summer for Liverpool fans so far. We’ve become used to seeing some movement by this stage of June.

But with the international competitions blurring things and Slot only just beginning his work at the AXA Training Centre, that always seemed unlikely this time around.

With July fast approaching though, Liverpool do need to start getting a little more serious. Targets should have been finalised by now.

Still it seems as though the Reds are not anywhere close to pulling the trigger on any player at all. The latest links have come to Wolves full-back Rayan Ait Nouri. But bringing in a new left-back should not be a priority for Slot.

As a result, Liverpool supporters are simply going to have to sit tight. Eze may be one that advances over the coming weeks, he may not. For now, we wait.
