Paul Merson says player who left Chelsea last year has been 'outstanding' at Euro 2024

Paul Merson claims that a player who only left Chelsea last year has been a huge success so far at this summer’s Euro 2024 tournament.

There’s been a huge turnover of the squad at Stamford Bridge in the last two years, so there’s former Chelsea players popping up all over.

The likes of N’Golo Kante, Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount, Kalidou Koulibaly and Callum Hudson-Odoi all left the Blues in 2023. Meanwhile, Chelsea have moved forward assembling a much younger squad built for the future.

Paul Merson amazed by N’Golo Kante form

When Kante left Chelsea in the summer of 2023 and joined Saudi Arabia club Al-Ittihad on a free transfer, most probably suspected he was finished at the highest level. He’s proven any doubters wrong this summer, though.

Paul Merson thinks Kante has been fantastic so far at Euro 2024 for France.

Merson told Sportskeeda: “N’Golo Kante went to Saudi Arabia where he was head and shoulders above everyone else, and he’s been outstanding at Euro 2024 – how have Chelsea let him go?

“It sums him up as a player – he’s a great professional. You’d think he would’ve become a little lazy after a year in Saudi Arabia – not a chance with Kante.”

Former Chelsea man is lighting up the Euros

Kante has started all three group matches for France as they qualified as runners-up. Next, the French play Belgium in the last-16 phase on Monday.

The Chelsea Chronicle agrees that Kante’s looked as good as ever this summer.

Aged 33, the all-action central midfielder is still able to cover every blade of grass on a football pitch.
