Unai Emery can now make history at Aston Villa by signing ‘monstrous’ Pau Torres rival

Unai Emery can make history at Aston Villa this summer by landing a ‘monstrous’ rival for Spaniard Pau Torres in defence.

Aston Villa have made a very busy start to the summer transfer window in an attempt to alleviate their PSR concerns.

Douglas Luiz is closing in on a move to Juventus in a swap deal that will see Enzo Barrenchea and Samuel Iling-Junior join in the other direction.

Academy starlet Tim Iroegbunham has also completed a move to Everton with Lewis Dobbin arriving from Goodison Park as Villa continue to exploit the PSR loophole.

Unai Emery is equally looking to strengthen in defence as left-back Ian Maatsen nears a switch from Chelsea, and the Dutchman isn’t the only defensive option who could join this summer.

Aston Villa eye Atletico Madrid defender Reinildo

Emery’s key problem at Villa last term was his porous defence.

The Villans conceded a whopping 61 goals in 38 matches, shipping more than relegation-threatened Everton who finished with the fourth-best defence in the Premier League.

Villa also conceded at least 20 goals more than the other three sides, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, who finished in the top four.

That has left Emery craving added quality at the back, with Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb linking the Spaniard with a move for Atletico Madrid defender Reinildo Mandava.

The 30-year-old – who sees his contract expire in 2025 – is also being watched by Juventus, with the report claiming he may leave the Metropolitano Stadium.

Reinildo Mandava would be a solid alternative to Pau Torres

Pau Torres enjoyed an outstanding first season in the Premier League after joining from Villarreal last summer.

The 27-year-old was a pillar of consistency in the heart of Emery’s defence, displaying class in possession and an unwavering ability to defend without it.

Torres – when fully fit – made himself undroppable and that will likely be the case next season however, Atletico defender Reinildo has shown he has the qualities to push the Spaniard for a starting spot.

Dubbed ‘monstrous’ for his exceptional performances after returning from injury, Reinildo excels in almost every department when comparing his defensive and technical attributes to defenders across Europe.

As delineated by the above table, Reinildo is astute at carrying the ball out from deep and defending his box while showcasing his threat at the other end.

A Champions League-level player – who has featured in the competition 19 times – Emery could make history by landing Reinildo from Atletico as he’d become the first Mozambique player to play in the Premier League.
