The Dallas Mavericks are moving guard Tim Hardaway Jr. The former Michigan star has been traded to the Detroit Pistons for fellow guard Quentin Grimes, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Pistons will also receive three second-round picks in the deal, Wojnarowski reports.

Dallas is sending a 2025 second-round pick and two 2028 second-round picks to Detroit, per Woj.

Tim Hardaway Jr. averaged 14.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game last season for the Mavericks. However, he shot 40 percent from the field and 35 percent from 3-point range while losing rotational minutes during the playoffs.

Quentin Grimes averaged 7.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game this past season while spending time with the Knicks and Pistons. For his career he averages 8.5 points per game and is a 37.1 percent 3-point shooter.

Grimes started his college career at Kansas, before transferring to Houston. He was selected with the No. 25 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. The former McDonald’s All-American was a third-team All-American at Houston in 2021.

As for Tim Hardaway Jr., he was named first-team All-Big Ten in 2023 before entering the NBA Draft. Hardaway was selected with the No. 24 overall pick in the 2023 draft by the Knicks. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team in 2024 but has otherwise had an up-and-down career.

One year remains on a four-year deal that Hardaway signed with the Mavericks ahead of the 2021-2022 season. His cap hit is set to be just over $16 million. Moving him allows Dallas to spend on other free agents, and re-signing Derrick Jones Jr. is a high priority for the Mavericks.

“This move positions the Mavs to offer a significant part of the $12.9M nontaxpayer midlevel exception to Derrick Jones Jr. GM Nico Harrison has called re-signing Jones ‘priority 1A and 1B’ for the offseason,” ESPN’s Tim MacMahon posted on Twitter.

Grimes is in the final year of his rookie contract and is set to make $4.3 million in 2024-25.

This trade allows both players to have a bit of a homecoming. Hardaway played his college ball with the Michigan Wolverines and will now return to the Great Lakes State with the Pistons. As for Grimes, he was born in Houston and will now get back in Texas, just a few hours north in Dallas.

The Mavericks are looking to make another deep playoff run next season after reaching the NBA Finals this past year.
