German police have carried out about 830,000 border checks in the period from the start of the Euro 2024 football tournament up until June 7, police chief Dieter Romann said on Friday.

A total of 603 arrest warrants had been executed, he said, for offences varying from homicide to failure to make maintenance payments.

Some 85 people were also stopped during the border checks for politically motivated crime - including international terrorism, left-wing and right-wing extremism.

According to national police chief Romann, 86 violent hooligans were turned back at the border. By Thursday, 3,261 people had been turned back out of 4,659 unauthorized entries.

"Every day, 22,000 law enforcement officers from the Federal Police are deployed solely in connection with football," he said.

Temporary checks were put in place at all German borders and will last until July 19, a few days after the final on July 14.

In addition, existing checkpoints at the land borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland were extended by six months from the end of May.
