Swiss keeper Sommer not thinking about 2021 penalty heroics v Italy

Yann Sommer took the plaudits when Switzerland beat France on penalties in the last 16 of the previous Euros, but the keeper is not even contemplating a repeat against Italy on Saturday in this tournament's first knock-out stage.

Switzerland drew two of their Group A games while Italy have struggled for goals so far, meaning a shoot-out in the first Euro 16 game cannot be discounted.

"I don't think about it much before the game. There would be too many situations to consider. I concentrate on the game," Sommer said on Friday, aware the win over France in 2021, when he saved Kylian Mbappé's spot-kick, was the first time the Nati have reached the Euro quarters.

"If the time comes, the staff will be very well prepared and we would prepare properly for it."

The shot-stopper, who plays in Italy with Inter Milan, hopes keeping it tight at the back means his side can nick a goal and do not need penalties.

"It's pleasing how well we've defended so far. We'll be expected to put in a good performance again. If we can bring our spirit onto the pitch, we can make life difficult for Italy," he said.

The game pits two of the best goalkeepers in Europe against each other, with Gianluigi Donnarumma superb for the holders in the group stage.

"He is an absolutely top goalkeeper. He is still very young but has gained a lot of experience, I really enjoy watching him," Sommer said.

"He is an exciting goalkeeper. My goalkeeping coach at Inter also coached him at PSG."
