Ole Miss athletics director Keith Carter joined Ben Garrett in this Friday (June 28, 2024) edition of ‘The Flagship’ to answer questions exclusively submitted by Ole Miss Spirit (OMSpirit.com) subscribers.
Join the Spirit today for as low as $1. Carter covered a number of topics. Topping the list, however, was his decision to retain long-time Rebel baseball coach Mike Bianco, as well as the shifting sands of NIL and the buy-out language in Lane Kiffin’s contract.
“We don’t really get into details on buy-outs. That’s kind of my one thing we don’t share a lot about,” Carter began, before dropping some context clues. Carter was speaking on program protection for any potential NFL opportunities for Kiffin, who’s entering his fifth Ole Miss season.
“We do have strong buy-out language in there. There are some outs for the coaches in that.”
Carter also had thoughts on the current state of name, image and likeness across college sports.
Carter detailed how NIL will fall under the athletics umbrella once new revenue-sharing regulations are officially in place.
“It’ll be under the athletics department,” Carter said. “The rev-share will come directly from the athletics department. The athletics foundation will be a huge component of that. Fundraise dollars will be shifted over to help handle some of those obligations.
“The Grove Collective and what that looks like will continue to be a part of it. We don’t know if Walker (Jones) and (the collective) team will be pulled in-house or if we’ll have to contract them, as a third party. We know they obviously have the institutional knowledge and background to continue to help us through the process. All three of those will play a huge part, but the money will directly flow from the athletics department and the new rev-share.
