Mike Florio reacts to Patrick Mahomes' mother's comment about his future in the NFL

It’s been seven years since Patrick Mahomes was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs.

In September, the quarterback turns 29. And he already has three Super Bowls under his belt.

As the age of 30 approaches, debates about the player’s longevity in the NFL are growing louder. In fact, comparisons with Tom Brady are more fervent than ever.

To surpass the GOAT, Mahomes needs at least four more titles.

His age and the number of years he has left in the league are not yet a concern. In fact, it’s not even something to think about.

Mandi Mahomes, Pat’s mother, is proud of her son’s stance on his future

Obviously, the signal-caller has already been asked when he intends to play American football. And the first thing Mahomes mentions when talking about it is family – how much he wants to be there and enjoy them.

According to him, prolonging his stay in KC as long as possible is the main objective, but you can’t control the future.

Mandi Mahomes, Pat’s mum, in an appearance on The Mom Game podcast, heaped praise on her son for his attitude when it comes to understanding that life off the field is more important.

“I hear him, you know, make comments like, ‘If the game takes away from my kids, I might not play as long as Tom Brady,’ and I’m like, I’m so proud of him for that.”

Brady retired at the age of 45.

From this year onwards, Mahomes will need to play around 12 more seasons to reach the TB12 mark.

Mike Florio shares his thoughts on Mahomes’ longevity in the NFL

On the NFL on NBC show Profootball Talk, Mike Florio discusses how many more years Pat should stay in the league.

As expected, mentioning Tom Brady is almost a requirement, as he is the biggest reference when it comes to longevity in sport.

The analyst puts the former New England Patriots star’s situation into context. There came a point when he no longer needed to prove anything, his ex-wife had already asked him to retire to enjoy time with his family. Brady, however, went ahead with the game.

Florio doesn’t see Mahomes following the same path: “The idea of Patrick Mahomes walking away now, if he gets to (more) seven or eight (years), ok, (but) when he gets to seven or eight, the reaction might be ‘How about nine, how about 10?’,”.

He added: “And I think one of the things he’s gonna be able to do is play at a high level without being completely and totally obsessed like Tom Brady was, because Patrick Mahomes has more natural skills than Tom Brady ever had. Yes, Tom Brady is blessed with a great arm and he worked his ass off to make it better and better,”.

“One of the things that Mahomes is trying to do is get to the point where Brady and other great quarterbacks as they get older, nothing fools him.”

“He walks up the line of scrimmage, he knows exactly what’s gonna happen. He doesn’t need to run around with his hair on fire and make some spectacular throw at a time when it feels like the play is destined to become a disaster. He’s gonna know where to make that throw, how to make that throw when to make that throw before the ball is even in his hands.”

The NFL expert then puts a plausible thought on the table.

“As Patrick Mahomes gets to that point, can he better balance work and family and still do both without undermining the requirements of being proper and prepared and present for his teammates? Is there a way to be ready and effective while still giving extra time to your family and your children?”, said.

Florio’s verdict on reality

It’s not yet time to imagine KC without the presence of Pat Mahomes, but one thing is certain: when he retires, the team will have a new face.

Mike Florio spoke about the fans – with good reason – not liking to talk about this topic, but that deluding themselves can’t be an option either.

“There is a tomorrow that involves Patrick not playing football for the Kansas City Chiefs. I’m sorry to point out reality. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.”

“Patrick Mahomes will not become frozen in time and be the quarterback of the Chiefs forever. There will be no AI quarterback version of Patrick Mahomes that continues to run the show in Kansas City for the next thousand years.”

For now, it’s time to look for the three-peat.
