“He was a bad person online”: Gamer arrested for attempted murder

One gamer took raging to a whole other level, traveling all the way to Florida to murder another ArcheAge player.

According to a report by WJAX-TV, Edward Kang, 20, of New Jersey was arrested Sunday morning and charged with attempted murder after he flew to Florida to assault another gamer with a hammer. It all started with a dispute over the MMORPG ArcheAge.

Nassau county sheriff Bill Leeper held a news conference earlier this week, explaining how they’d met on the game and got into a dispute online. Kang told his mom he was flying to Florida to meet an online friend but whatever happened in-game caused Kang travel to another state and break into the Zachary Dinh’s home. When he got up from gaming to use the bathroom, Kang attacked.

Using a hammer, Kang struck the victim in the head several times. Leeper described the wounds as “severe but non-life-threatening.” When Dinh started screaming, an older family member ran to the room to stop the attack. They saw Kang laying face down on the floor with Dinh on top of him.

For this, Kang was charged with attempted murder. He was booked into the Nassau County Jail.

“This was a weird one,” said Leeper. “Some things you can’t make up.”

When asked why he flew to Florida to attack another ArcheAge player, Kang said that the victim was “a bad person online.” He then asked how much time he’d get for “breaking and entering and assault.”

As the news spread online, gamers started to learn of the shocking attack over Reddit and TikTok. Many questioned how Kang felt rage that long, noting that he had to feel angry as he logged off the game, booked a ticket, drove to the airport, flew to Florida, and found the man’s home.

Since the attack, ArcheAge was shut down on June 27. This was due to a lack of players. So it seems Kang sorta did this all for nothing.

“Mr. Kang, it’s going to be a long time before you play video games again,” Leeper said.
