Tournament director Philipp Lahm has praised the atmosphere at Euro 2024 and highlighted fan matches as "the latest phenomenon" ahead of Saturday's start of the knock-out rounds.

"The group stage is over, and EURO 2024 shows us how valuable such major events are," Lahm said on platform X.

"They bring people together and create shared experiences. The atmosphere in the German stadiums and on the streets shows how much football connects people and creates a sense of community.

"Fans from different nations enrich the EURO with their customs & chants. They bring color & joy.

"Fan marches through the cities are the latest phenomenon. These encounters make the tournament a European festival. It's simply a lot of fun & we hope it continues this way."

Several nations, most notably the Netherlands, Turkey, Romania and Austria, had organized fan marches on match days in the cities where their teams were playing.

More than 30,000 Dutch marched through Hamburg on June 16 ahead of their team's first match against Poland.

With 36 of the 51 matches completed, the tournament atmosphere has also profited from the good showings of the German home team so far. Germany play Denmark in the last 16 on Saturday night.
