WWII bomb near Tesla plant east of Berlin detonated

An unexploded World War II bomb found near Tesla's large production plant in Grünheide to the east of Berlin was detonated in a controlled explosion on Saturday, Nico Bauermeister, the head of the local public order office told dpa.

The cordon around the site had been lifted, and residents and workers in businesses in the area could now return, Bauermeister said.

The 250 kilogram bomb was first reported by an ordnance removal service on Wednesday. Removal was ruled out as unsafe, and a decision was taken to detonate it.

Several commercial areas in the vicinity were evacuated, including parts of the Tesla plant. A company spokeswoman said there was no weekend production there in any case.

The incident did not affect a Tesla protest camp in the same woodland where the bomb was found. Protestors have set up camp with treehouses and tents in an attempt to block expansion of the plant.
