Large bush fire breaks out north of Athens

A large bush and forest fire broke out on Saturday in a densely wooded area around 20 kilometres north of the Greek capital Athens.

According to the fire services, helicopters and fire-fighting aircraft as well as hundreds of firefighters are working to contain the flames.

The fire follows a long period with little rain and several weeks with temperatures of over 35 degrees Celsius. In addition, strong winds raged in the region on Saturday, with gusts above 62 kilometres per hour, according to the meteorological office.

Plumes of smoke spread and many areas of Athens reeked of burnt wood and ash.

According to reports by the Greek public broadcaster ERT, tourist facilities are not in the vicinity of the fire area.

Greece's Civil Defence once again warned that the second-highest fire alert level would be in effect in large parts of central Greece over the weekend.
