LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier is preparing for his first season as the Tigers’ starting quarterback, and he’s thankful to have a reliable offensive line right in front of him.
Pretty much every facet of the 2023 LSU offense was elite, including the play up front. With veterans throughout and one of the best tackle combinations in the country, no drop-off is expected from this unit. Plus, now that they’ve been around, Nussmeier says the O-linemen are some of the leaders of the team.
“I give a lot of credit up front, they’re really the core of us. They keep us together,” Nussmeier commented at this week’s Manning Passing Academy. “When you have guys like that, they can kind of lead and tie everybody together. It’s huge when you have an offensive line with that kind of mindset.”
He even compared the offensive line to the cops!
“I mean, just having that core up front. It’s almost like a force, almost like a police department I guess. You know, they’re policing everybody because they don’t care, that’s who they are. The bomb squad, they’re going to make sure we’re doing things the right way.”
Nussmeier has complete confidence in his linemen, and continued raving about the 2024 OL group.
“Coach (Brad) Davis has done an unbelievable job with them. All five of those guys have stepped up tremendously and, you know, all credit goes to them and they’ve done an amazing job. So, I’m excited to see how they continue to lead us.”
When asked about his confidence in the group, Nussmeier responded with a resounding “100%.”
Nussmeier on becoming QB1
After sitting back and watching Jayden Daniels put together the best individual season in college football last year, Garrett Nussmeier has some clown-sized shoes to fill. But he’s just honored to get to represent the purple and gold.
“It means everything to get to represent this university, to get to represent this state,” Nussmeier told On3’s Shea Dixon at the Manning Passing Academy. “Being the quarterback of LSU is a dream of mine since I was a kid. So getting to live that dream is amazing. I feel extremely blessed and I think God each and every day when I wake up that this is the life I get to live right now.”
Nussmeier knows he’s stepping into a different light this season and he needs to be ready to produce consistently on every down.
“It’s my job and I feel like it’s my responsibility to be the best that I can be, to do the best that I can for my team, just for everybody that supports for us, everybody that roots for us,” he said. “So that’s my goal is just to make sure people who believe in me and believe in us, to make sure that I do what I can to pay them back.”
