Jamal Lowe arrival at Sheffield Wednesday could now spell imminent exit for key player - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday are set to announce the signing of winger Jamal Lowe.

Danny Rohl has had a prolific start to the summer transfer window ahead of the 2024/25 Championship season.

They will be looking to build on their brilliant conclusion to the 2023/24 season, where they stayed up on the last day of the season.

Blockbuster signing Yan Valery has piqued the interest of many, with Sheffield Wednesday also announcing the signing of Svante Ingelsson on Friday.

Former Sheffield United wing back Max Lowe and goalkeeper Ben Hamer are the other two arrivals on S6 to take the tally to four signings confirmed so far for Rohl.

They have now moved closer to confirming a deal to bring winger Jamal Lowe to Hillsborough following a season on loan at Swansea City, as first revealed by Sheffield Wednesday News.

However, the deal could spell the end for a current Sheffield Wednesday fan favourite, whose contract is set to expire this summer.

Jamal Lowe signing could see an end to Josh Windass’ time at Sheffield Wednesday

Josh Windass’ future at Sheffield Wednesday has been uncertain for some time as his contract is set to expire this summer.

Windass had rejected his final contract offer, with Championship clubs, including West Brom, circling the 30-year-old as a result.

With Lowe being a very similar player to Windass, it suggests that Rohl has acted quickly to bring the former Premier League winger in as a replacement for the former Rangers attacker.

As a result, the writing is on the wall that Windass’ departure from Hillsborough is imminent.

Will Jamal Lowe be able to provide what Josh Windass did for Sheffield Wednesday

Windass was undoubtedly crucial at the most important moments across his time at Sheffield Wednesday, from the last minute bullet header to secure promotion to the Championship in the 2022/23 League One play-off final against Barnsley, to his three consecutive goals at the end of the 2023/24 season to keep the Owls safe from relegation.

However, when comparing the form of both players, neither player has massively outdone the other in terms of stats across the 2023/24 Championship season.

Windass achieved an average goal contribution of 0.32 per game, whilst Lowe’s stands at 0.34, showing the similar impact of both players.

Above all, Wednesday will be losing a true servant at the club who has been instrumental in preventing the club from dropping back down to League One.

Sheffield Wednesday is a breeding ground for optimism ahead of the new season, but you must thank Windass for providing the grounds for that over the last two years.
