What Liverpool insiders are really feeling about signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle

Liverpool are still yet to make any concrete moves in the summer transfer window.

The Reds have been linked with all sorts of players ever since the end of the season in May but are yet to follow through on anything.

Part of the reason for that is of course the ongoing international tournaments. Liverpool initially had 14 players taking part in the Copa America and Euro 2024.

But as well as those members of the Liverpool squad out in the United States and Germany, the Reds also have a whole host of potential transfer targets playing for their countries, too.

With both tournaments set to end over the next two weeks though, Arne Slot reportedly has a chance to get an exciting deal over the line.

How Liverpool feel about Anthony Gordon chances

One of the players to have emerged as a genuine transfer target for Liverpool has been Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.

Gordon has had a terrific season for the Magpies, leading to a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

And as England prepare to take on Slovakia on Sunday, Newcastle face the Premier League’s PSR deadline on the same day. They need to make a sale.

As a result, Gordon was reportedly offered to Liverpool in a part-exchange with Jarell Quansah. Although the Reds rejected that possibility, there seems to be a chance that Gordon could still end up at Anfield.

Now, speaking exclusively to Rousing The Kop, journalist Graeme Bailey has reported the inside story on Liverpool’s interest in Gordon.

“I understand that Liverpool’s interest in Gordon is long-standing, even before his move to Newcastle they have been hugely impressed with him,” says Bailey.

“I am told analytics wise he shows up very well,” adds the reporter. “The feeling at Anfield is that he is a special talent. Newcastle have serious issues with PSR – it looks unlikely as we talk on Saturday, but never say never.

“If Newcastle come up with the right deal, and that does not include Jarrell Quansah, then there is a chance – if a small one -that it could happen.”

Will Liverpool sign Anthony Gordon?

This is an exciting link for Liverpool fans and what makes it all the more intriguing is that Newcastle could need to make the sale by Sunday.

If the Magpies manage to offload another member of the squad, then it’s unlikely that Gordon will be offered out to clubs again.

Having said that though, the 23-year-old is a boyhood Liverpool fans. Once Newcastle have opened that box and a move to Anfield has become a possibility, perhaps he’ll try and force it through anyway.

Initially though, it has been claimed – and reiterated by Bailey – that it still looks ‘unlikely’ that Gordon will be joining Liverpool.

Nevertheless, there’s clearly big interest there on both the player’s and the club’s side. If not this summer, maybe this is more one for 12 months time.
