HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. - Julie Magill, who is running against Nadia Combs and Layla Collins for Hillsborough County School Board, District 1, spoke candidly with Tampa Free Press about her candidacy.

A registered Republican since 1987, except for one year, she described her beliefs of what needs to change with the area school system and revealed the threats that led her to file as an Independent voter in 2022.

Magill is a real estate broker, managing Member of Jalexian Realty, and General Contractor of Jalexian Construction in Tampa. She also has a license in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning and said her experience gives her expertise in budgets and contracts.

She also owns Presidenttrump.com, a website launched in 2013. She explained how the website partly caused her to switch in 2022 from a Republican to Independent voter.

“We were getting death threats and got nervous and decided to go under the radar... We started getting threats around 2016 to 2019. The threats were phone calls, even from overseas, and social media threats. We got shut down by Facebook – they censored me for an inappropriate comment - but had none. I had 4,500 followers...but needed to protect my family. When Biden threatened armed IRS agents and we are small business, we freaked out. This is what caused the ultimate decision to register in 2022 as an Independent," said Magill.

Magill has since switched back to Republican voting. Presidenttrump.com is still an active website.

When asked what motivated her to run for the School Board, she replied, “My husband was seeing a televised reading of a questionable book. I’ve become kind of famous as the code violation lady. ‘Take that to the School Board tonight,’ my husband said. So I went to the School Board meeting and was asked if I was going to speak, then another was asked, so I realized I should get involved. I will take my passion for code violations to the School Board.”

Magill believes her run against Nadia Combs, currently the Board Chair for Hillsborough County Schools, offers a better opportunity for area parents. She stated, “She spends too much on emotional and social teaching. Why should we teach them to decide what sex they are when they need to learn reading, writing, and arithmetic? I also saw $400 million budgeted for remodeling schools, but I don’t see schools being remodeled. There are a lot of questions in that budget that the public doesn’t know about.”

Magill strongly supports budgets for vocational schools to help young people who are not inclined towards college get a high-paying job in the trades instead of being relegated “to McDonald's for the rest of their lives.” She supports military veterans teaching in the classroom. “This is something I am passionate about,” she said.

Regarding student performance, Magill said, “Our students are not anywhere near the performance they should be...they’re not getting the right curriculum because of social and emotional teaching. She also stated, “We need separate classes for non-English speaking children to get them up to speed rather than lower the bar.”
