Under the leadership of new head coach Sherrone Moore, the Michigan Wolverines will embark on a journey in 2024 to defend their national championship crown.

When it comes to expectations for the Wolverines this year, it is status quo: championship or bust. One of the groups more is looking at to help Michigan finish this season as back-to-back national champions is the linebacker corps. During a recent conversation with the press, the Wolverines head coach shed some light on the position and what he expects out of them this year.

“The linebackers Jaishawn (Barham) and Ernest (Hausmann), to start off, are two of the best ones in the country,” Moore said. “They’re going to surprise a lot of people, which is par for the course. I feel like we got a good nucleus of guys behind them that can really challenge them and push them. So I’m very excited about those guys.”

Michigan has been known in recent years for its stellar defensive play, and Barham and Hausmann are next in line to carry that torch. But it’s not just them, according to more. Michigan has a slew of talent throughout the second level of the defense, like Junior Colson, Jimmy Rolder, and Micah Pollard, who are all already helping lead the Wolverines’ defense to another successful campaign this season.

Moore explains challenges of a head coaching change following national title

Moore got the keys to the Michigan football program in some unusual circumstances, taking over for Jim Harbaugh on the heels of a national championship. But Moore isn’t running from taking over for a national title defense.

Moore, who became the head coach at Michigan after serving as offensive coordinator, could’ve surely walked into a less pressure-packed scenario for his first go as a college head coach. It’s just not the way he wanted it.

“For me I never really want anything but to be in a situation that challenges you and for us, it’s just another chip on our shoulder because people are just going to say what they’re going to say about the schedule and this and that and we just block out the noise and go to work,” Moore said.
