Plenty is new with the Michigan football coaching staff in 2024, namely head coach Sherrone Moore stepping in for Jim Harbaugh. But Moore’s promotion meant a shuffle on the offensive staff behind him.

That meant a promotion from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator for Kirk Campbell. And as Moore discussed the move recently, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“The past two years, obviously calling plays, Kirk was right there with me as an analyst my first year and the second year as the quarterback coach,” Moore said. “He’s in my mind, he thinks like me. He’s very creative, very innovative, extremely knowledgable about the game, run and pass. And he’s a guy I feel like I can trust to run that offense and run the staff, be the head coach of the offense, so super excited and he works his tail off.”

Campbell also brings the sort of exacting, bordering-on-psychotic enthusiasm for the job that Moore loves.

And the head coach shared an anecdote to that effect.

“We won the national championship and Kirk Campbell’s in there yelling at the screen the day after because somebody’s route depth wasn’t right,” Moore said. “I said, ‘Kirk, go home, we just won the natty, bro.’ So that’s the type of guy you want.”

Moore has big shoes to fill

Moore got the keys to the Michigan football program in some unusual circumstances, taking over for Harbaugh on the heels of a national championship. But Moore isn’t running from taking over for a national title defense.

Moore, who became the head coach at Michigan after serving as offensive coordinator, could’ve surely walked into a less pressure-packed scenario for his first go as a college head coach. It’s just not the way he wanted it.

“For me I never really want anything but to be in a situation that challenges you and for us, it’s just another chip on our shoulder because people are just going to say what they’re going to say about the schedule and this and that and we just block out the noise and go to work,” Moore said.

And for Moore, specifically, staying at Michigan was a dream.

“So I’m just happy because I’m at Michigan and I love this place, I love the people, I love the alumni, I love the students and most important I love our players, like they’re my kids,” Moore said. “So I’m just happy that I can lead this program.”
