Arsenal legend Ian Wright revealed the one club he was 'desperate' to join late in his career

Arsenal legend Ian Wright departed the club in 1998 after winning the Premier League title, but the rest of his career did not go as planned.

Wright spent seven glorious years at Arsenal under George Graham, Bruce Rioch and Arsene Wenger, becoming the top scorer in the history of the club until Thierry Henry came along to break his record a few years later.

The Englishman recently revealed that he knew his time at Highbury was coming to an end after a rollerblading incident which angered Wenger, and with Nicolas Anelka the main striker at Arsenal, Wright’s time in North London had come to a natural end.

The striker would go on to play for West Ham, Nottingham Forest, Celtic and Burnley before retiring in 2000, and none of these were particularly successful spells.

Wright would have joined a different club if he could have though, and he revealed that he was actually desperate to play for Millwall before he retired.

Ian Wright revealed desire to play for Millwall after leaving Arsenal

Speaking to the BBC in 2020, Wright revealed that he grew up going to Millwall games with his family, and that he was keen on playing for the South East London side.

“I’ve been going to Millwall since I was nine, when I used to have to go and stay with my aunt Sally’s down in Deptford, and so I started going Millwall then,” he revealed.

“I love it, I loved coming to Millwall when I was younger, it’s the only team I wanted to play for, obviously didn’t work out that way, and at the end when I went to Burnley, I was desperate to come to Millwall just to finish my career, but it didn’t happen.”

Wright is best known for his playing days at Arsenal and Crystal Palace as a goalscoring icon at both clubs, but also has a connection with other clubs in London.

The former England star is clearly fond of Millwall from his childhood days, but played for their bitter rivals West Ham, who he also had an affection for.

Wright had a strong connection with Arsenal, and enjoyed a strong relationship with the late Kevin Campbell and David ‘Rocky’ Rocastle during his early playing days at the club.
