Edson Alvarez is being strongly linked with a move from West Ham United to Manchester United this summer.
Manchester United were first linked with a move to sign Hammers midfield star Alvarez, 26, just last week.
Edson Alvarez has firmly established himself as a key player for West Ham, since moving to the London Stadium for €38 million (£32 million) last summer.
It was suggested just last week that Man United could try to bring him to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window, with Erik ten Hag a big fan of the Mexico international.
Those claims sent the Hammers fans into meltdown, with the prospect of losing one of our best players to Man United a really concerning one.
The uncompromising, tough-tackling central midfielder certainly impressed in the Premier League last season.
The way he instantly hit the ground running for West Ham was a real sight to behold, especially considering the fact that he just moved from the far inferior Eredivisie.
He’s under contract at the London Stadium until the summer of 2028, so West Ham are under absolutely no pressure to sell him this summer.
But are the Hammers owners actually open to selling him?
West Ham stance on selling Edson Alvarez to Manchester United
Aside from his disciplinary problems, Alvarez proved to be perfectly suited to Premier League football with the Hammers.
In 31 Premier League games for the Hammers last season, the 26-year-old midfield warrior averaged 2.6 tackles, 1.4 interceptions and 2.3 clearances. He made 38.5 passes on average per match and recorded a completion rate of 86.1% (Who Scored).
Those are some really impressive stats, considering the fact that it was his debut season in England.
Julen Lopetegui will surely be desperate for Alvarez to stay at the club and play a key role for his side next season.
The way that the former Ajax man has the ability to receive the ball in tight spaces from his defenders and his composure in possession will be crucial to the way that Lopetegui likes his teams to play.
But will he even be at the London Stadium next season?
According to a report from The Mirror, the answer to that question is clear:
The British tabloid reports, “West Ham have no interest in selling Edson Alvarez to Manchester United or any other club for that matter. United had been pondering a bid for the Mexican, who previously played under Erik ten Hag, before Alvarez badly injured his hamstring at the Copa America.”
So it seems as though West Ham don’t want to sell Edson Alvarez to Manchester United, but Ten Hag may well have dropped his interest in the midfielder after the hamstring injury he sustained the other day whilst playing for Mexico.
That’s a big relief for us. The Mexican absolutely has to play a key role for us under Lopetegui next season and beyond.
West Ham are lost without the 26-year-old midfield enforcer. If he can address his disciplinary problems, I really think he should be made our new club captain.
The Athletic have described him as an ‘unbelievable’ player and they’re not wrong there.
Edson Alvarez isn’t going anywhere this summer, and that really is very good news indeed for the West Ham fans.
