Tensions between Israel and the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have been escalating, prompting the United States to launch diplomatic efforts to prevent a full-scale war in the region.

Iran has now issued a warning to Israel, cautioning that any invasion of Lebanon would trigger an "obliterating war."

The border between Israel and Lebanon has witnessed a series of daily exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah since the current conflict in Gaza broke out on October 7. Fears of a full-blown war have been growing, especially after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel was preparing for "a very tense operation" on the border with Lebanon.

There have been over 7,400 cross-border attacks between Israel and Lebanon, highlighting the volatility of the situation in the region. These attacks have included rocket launches, airstrikes, and ground incursions, further escalating the tensions between the two sides.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has warned that Hezbollah understands "very well that we can inflict massive damage in Lebanon if a war is launched." He has also stated that Israel is "preparing for every scenario," indicating the country's readiness to respond to any potential aggression.

Iran has now entered the fray, issuing a stern warning to Israel against any "full-scale military aggression" in Lebanon. The Islamic republic's United Nations mission has made it clear that such an action would lead to an "obliterating war."

In its statement, Iran's mission to the United Nations said that "All options, [including] the full involvement of all Resistance Fronts, are on the table." This suggests that Iran is willing to mobilize its network of allied armed groups across the region to support Hezbollah in the event of an Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

Iran has also dismissed Israel's threats to attack Hezbollah in Lebanon as "psychological warfare" and "propaganda," further escalating the rhetorical battle between the two countries.

“Albeit Iran deems a psychological warfare the Zionist regime’s propaganda about intending to attack Lebanon, should it embark on full-scale military aggression, an obliterating war will ensure,” the X post said. “All options, incl. the full involvement of Resistance Fronts, are on the table.”

Hezbollah's Threat of an Unrestrained War

Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, has also threatened a war with "no restraint and no rules and no ceilings" in case of a major Israeli offensive against Lebanon. This further underscores the potential for a devastating conflict should hostilities escalate.

Hezbollah is widely recognized as a formidable military force, with a substantial arsenal of rockets and other advanced weaponry. The group's ability to inflict significant damage on Israel has served as a deterrent against a full-scale Israeli assault on Lebanon.

Hezbollah's close ties with Iran, which provides the group with financial, military, and logistical support, have been a source of concern for Israel and the international community. This relationship has further complicated the geopolitical landscape in the region.
