France is heading to the polls for the first round of snap legislative elections today (30 June), to elect 577 representatives of the National Assembly.

French President Emmanuel Macron stirred up a political storm following his poor performance in European elections on 9 June, in which the far-right National Rally came top.

A shift towards the right could lead to a period of “cohabitation” in domestic politics, with the centrist President Macron forced to work alongside a far-right Prime Minister.

The results of the first round are expected at 8 pm. Follow our live updates here until early in the morning with our journalists on the ground.
