Marcel Schäfer is leaving VfL Wolfsburg to join RB Leipzig as their new managing director for sport, both Bundesliga clubs said on Sunday.

Schäfer signed a contract until 2028 and will replace Max Eberl, who is now board member for sport at Bayern Munich.

Leipzig reportedly paid Wolfsburg a transfer fee of around €2 million ($2.14 million). Schäfer had a contract with his previous employer until 2026.

"Our mutual aim is to help this great club grow even more, be as successful as possible and be one of the top destinations for the best young talents in Europe. I’m really looking forward to being able to help write the next chapter in the incredible story of RB Leipzig," Schäfer said.

He starts the new job on August 1 and will be responsible for men’s, women’s and academy teams.

As a player, the former left back made 312 appearances for Wolfsburg between 2007 and 2017, winning the Bundesliga in 2009 and the German Cup in 2015. Schäfer played eight games for the Germany national team.

"We saw in our discussions with Marcel that he brings not only his skills and his contacts, but also a desire to drive RB Leipzig forward next season and beyond. His philosophy matches RB Leipzig perfectly," Leipzig chief executive Johann Plenge said.
